One of the Endangered Species of trees is the Baobab tree, which bears flowers, leaves and fruits for only three months a year and stores water in its trunks to sustain it through the remaining nine months. Some of the other endangered medicinal plant species are Berberis aristata, Podophyllum hexandrum and Gentiana kurroo found in the higher elevations of the Himalayas. Withania coagulans, Leptadenia reticulata and Mitragyna parvifolia are the biological names of three of the most endangered medical plants that grew in the deserts of Rajasthan.
Some of the other endangered species include the Cycas beddomei Dyer, the Pterocarpus santalinus linn tree (known as the red sandalwood tree) and the Decalepis hamiltonii (Wight & Arn). These three were commonly found in the Eastern Ghats section of India.
After two decades of much research and study in India, a list of about 1500 flowering and nonflowering plants, have been compiled that are either very rare or are endangered. The information is being published in the form of “The Red Data Books of Indian Plants”. The complete data will be in five volumes, and indicate the levels of threat, how to increase the numbers of these plants, plans for further studies, and involve plans to improve the habitat for the future of these plants.
